Better Choice Group Homes Incorporated (BCGHI) operates a supportive living home, located in Orangeville, Ontario, dedicated to supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities with complex behavioural needs. Direct Support Professionals
BCGHI Direct Support Professionals provide specialized care and support to persons receiving service to include daily activities of living, assisting with the coordinated development and execution of the person-centered planning process and in the implementation of behaviour support plans designed to modify the behaviour of people displaying with complex needs.
The Direct Support Professional provides support and advocates on behalf of persons supported to meet their physical, psychological and social needs.
Duties/ Responsibilities:
- Promotes and models a person- centered approach
- Responsible to engage and facilitate the Person-Centered Planning Process
- Works in tandem with persons supported in providing professional support and mentorship while engaging in activities within the community.
- Assists people supported with all areas of daily living to include daily living routines and skills, attending medical appointments, participating in community life, etc.
- Transporting persons to medical appointments, vocational, recreational, and educational activities in the community (i.e. Grocery shopping, recreational facilities, etc.)
- Prepares and administers medications according to the Medication Administration Record (MAR).
- Implements behavioural programs, as well as individualized behavioural protocols, skill acquisition programs, and completes the corresponding documentation
- Experience with data collection and report writing
- Interacts with person’s family and visitors to the home
- Completes all daily required documentation (i.e., shift summaries/reports, house charts, checklists, medication administration records, incident reports, behavioural data and all applicable forms, including completing all documentation in the persons binders/ and or electronic data base system
- Ensure the safety of all people supported and co-workers by ensuring a safe environment, following all safety protocols, and implementing the prescribed behavioural interventions.

- Strong decision making and prioritizing skills

- Availability and flexibility to work a variety of shifts
- Attends SMG Crisis Intervention and other training, as required.
- Computer skills required.
- Use protective equipment and wear protective devices or clothing that the employer deems as required, including the use of fit-tested N95 respirator and/or similar equipment.
Qualifications:
- Graduate of a Community College or University in a related field , i.e. Developmental Service Worker (DSW), Behavioural Science Technologist (BST), BA Psychology or equivalent
- At minimum, 2 years related experience (Will consider equivalent combination of education and experience)
- Successful completion of an approved pharmacology course
- Demonstrated ability to work well within a team
- Good communication skills – verbal and written
- Experience working with people with complex behaviours
- Valid Class “G” Driver’s License, a current copy of a Driver’s Abstract for review and verification that is satisfactory to BCGHI and use of vehicle
- Experience and/or knowledge in Applied Behavioural Analysis
- Successful completion of a Better Choice Group Homes Incorporated recognized pharmacology course
- Safe Management Group Crisis Intervention
- Certification in CPR/First Aid with AED
- Provision of a Criminal Records Check – Vulnerable Sector Search
